01The Problem
Python makes executing individual scripts straightforward, but switching between multiple small projects introduces recurring friction: developers must remember which file starts each project.
Unlike Go's go run . or Rust's cargo run, Python doesn't offer a universal convention for discovering and executing a project's main script.
The challenge was to eliminate unnecessary filename lookup while preserving Python's normal execution behavior, avoiding complex configuration, and preventing accidental execution of the wrong script.
02Context
py-modu emerged from a simple observation: running a Python project should not always require knowing its internal file structure.
Python's flexibility allows entry points such as main.py, app.py, or run.py, but that same flexibility makes a universal execution command difficult.
The project explored whether a lightweight command-line utility could introduce a predictable running convention without changing Python itself.
The result was py-modu, an open-source Python package distributed through PyPI and designed primarily for small projects, standalone scripts, and local development workflows.
